My relationship with Model A’s started when I was eight years old. My grandfather had a 28 AR and he would let me drive it, with him, all over the countryside. I grew up, went to work, started my business, and didn’t think much about the car. My grandmother called me up one day. She said that she had an offer of $500 for that old AR and should she sell it? I instantly took my trailer, went to her house and gave her $500 and a kiss. I brought the old tudor back home to my shop. I put the car in storage and didn’t think about it for a few years.
One day my nephew came to me and asked if he could take that Old Model A and make a hot rod out of it? I instantly took it out of the storage and straight to my house. It had been on blocks at grandma’s house and in my storage container for 20 years. I aired up the tires, cleaned out the carburetor, put in a new battery, tamped down the valves and started it up. I put my wife and family in and we drove around the block; chicken feathers flying everywhere. I pulled the remarkable little car into my garage and did my first ground up restoration.
Over the years my car didn’t get much use. Raising kids and running a business was a full-time job. I got older, joined the local Model A club and we started using the car. I soon found out that driving that three-speed transmission was dangerous. We have some pretty steep mountains where I live and, if you get it out of low gear going downhill, it’s pretty hard to stop. I looked around, saw some things with five-speeds that really interested me and developed my conversion for the five-speed in a Model A. My main business is oil and gas, but I’ll always be a Model A Guy.
